What To Look For When Choosing Your Driving School

Automotive Blog

You have made a wise choice by considering a driving school to teach you to drive. Learning on your own with a friend or family member may not give you the expertise that a good driving school will offer. But how do you choose the right driving school? The following are a few things that a good driver's education curriculum should cover.

Defensive Driving Techniques

These particular lessons are often overlooked or not given enough attention. Defensive driving lessons may save your life, as they give you a few pointers that will help you stay safe while driving. The following are just some of the things that you can learn:

  1. You will learn about which lane to use while on the highway. A good driving instructor will tell you that the left lane seems to be the safest, although extensive research has not been performed. The middle lane is prone to box-in's and the right lane is used for merging traffic as well as vehicles looking to exit.
  2. The instructor should teach you how to avoid certain collisions. You should learn different techniques to avoid the accident or reduce the damage if you cannot avoid a collision, such as allowing your vehicle to hit the right side of the object that you are going to hit; this will minimize the force of the impact.

Remember that these are just a few of the lessons that a good driving instructor will teach you.

Lessons for Basic Auto Maintenance and Emergencies

You should also be taught a few lessons in vehicle maintenance and emergencies. The following are just a few things that you should learn:

  1. Your driving instructor should teach you about checking the vehicles oils. You should learn how to check your transmission oil, engine oil, coolant, brake fluid and power steering. Making sure that these liquids are at their proper levels should keep your vehicle running well, provided that there isn't anything mechanically wrong with your car.
  2. You should learn how to check your tires to make sure they are properly inflated and that the thread is still in good condition. You may not know this, but many accidents occur because of worn or improperly inflated tires.
  3. You should get a lesson in dealing with a stopped vehicle. You will learn about your hazard lights and putting hazard cones around your vehicle until you get road assistance.

As you can see, a good driving school is worth every penny. Make sure that you ask questions before choosing to ensure you go to the best school.
