Keeping Your Vehicle's Tires Clean

Blog

The tires you have on your vehicle should be cleaned regularly to not only keep them looking sharp but also to help keep harmful dust from getting into your wheel well, possibly damaging your brake pads as a result. Routine cleaning can help your vehicle keep its traction and can aid in proper braking. Here are some instructions you can use to help you clean your tires properly.

Materials You Will Need

  • Bucket of soapy water
  • Large sponge
  • Tire cleaner in cream or spray form
  • Soft cloth
  • Bristle-brush
  • Terry cloth
  • Car wax
  • Applicator pad

Washing Down Your Tires

Start by washing your tires with soapy water. This can be done by applying it with a sponge and scrubbing the surfaces of the tires by hand. Do not use the soapy water on any other part of your car if you are washing the entire thing, as it may have an abundance of grease or tar built up in the water after you rinse your sponge.

Using A Tire Cleaner

Apply a cleanser made especially for tires with a clean piece of soft cloth. Rub it into the surfaces of your tire using a soft-bristled brush to help get the tire cleaner into all the nooks and crannies. Make sure to pay extra attention to the area where your brake pads are housed, as these can be very dirty from accumulating dust that will naturally emit when you apply pressure on the brakes to stop. Rinse off all of the tire cleaner and repeat the process on each tire.

Dry each tire thoroughly using a piece of terry cloth. If you leave any moisture on the rubber, car wax may not adhere properly. Drying your tires completely will also help to keep other parts of your vehicle from rusting unnecessarily due to excessive moisture being near metal surfaces.

Applying Car Wax

When applying car wax to your tires, use whatever applicator is provided with the car waxing kit you purchase. Use it as a buffing pad, rubbing the wax onto each tire's surface using a circular motion so all areas are covered. Using wax on your tires will help to keep the rubber material they are made out of from breaking down when exposed to harmful ultra-violet rays for extended periods of time. It protects your wheels from dust and grime. It will also give your tires a glistening, shiny sheen that will draw the eye to your wheels.
